ERIS - Emotion Reasoning Inference System

ERIS is the interpretive brain of Functional Empathy — transforming emotional signals into reasoned, ethical understanding.

What is ERIS?

The Emotion Reasoning Inference System (ERIS™) is MEC’s symbolic logic engine — where emotional meaning is validated, interpreted, and ethically structured.

ERIS doesn’t guess. It reasons.
Using symbolic logic, emotional codex mappings, and cultural overlays, ERIS transforms each emotional state into a Unified Emotion State Packet (UESP) — a structured, HEART-compliant artifact of emotional understanding.

This is the moment where MEC stops observing and starts understanding.

Where It Lives in the System

ERIS activates after ESIL completes the emotional state modeling.
It synthesizes that data using logic-based interpretation, ethical rule matching, and emotional arc validation.

Feeds into:

  • FEC (for output construction)

  • UESP Generation

  • EmotionID Assignment

Why It Matters

Empathy without reasoning is reaction.
Functional Empathy requires that emotions be processed logically, accountably, and contextually.

ERIS ensures that every response MEC delivers is grounded not just in signal detection — but in ethical comprehension.
This is how MEC knows what an emotion means before deciding how to respond.

Technical Summary

  • Input: ESIL Packet (or Pseudo-ESIL via HEI)

  • Output: Validated UESP + Assigned EmotionID

  • Core Functions:

    • Symbolic Reasoning through emotion primitives and arcs

    • Intent codification

    • Strategy readiness scoring

    • HEART Validator enforcement

  • Packet Type: UESP

  • Role in HEART Compliance: Formalizes emotion validity, ethical safeguards, and traceability

Key Relationships

  • Receives from: ESIL (or HEI when ambiguity is high)

  • Sends output to: FEC, Recovery Manager (when thresholds met)

  • Initializes: EmotionID trace for this emotional state
